Ensure consistent beer quality

certa brewing

In brewing, damaged yeast or inaccurate dosing of additives results in inconsistent beer quality while unplanned downtime due to equipment failures, long harvest lines or ineffective clean-in-place (CIP) drives up costs.

Our peristaltic and sinusoidal pumps, as well as long-life hoses, enable breweries to overcome these challenges by maintaining consistent beer quality, maximising productivity and reducing product waste, energy consumption and water use.

From gently handling yeast to accurately dosing additives, pumping abrasive diatomaceous earth, or metering water treatment chemicals, our solutions ensure that product is transferred or dosed accurately and hygienically without damage.

Faster yeast cropping time

With high suction capability, Certa Sine® pumps from MasoSine and Bredel hose pumps can easily handle a wide range of viscosities without compromising performance.

Certa pumps are easy to clean and perfect for handling viscous products or fluids (1 cP – 8 million cP). Their high suction capability enables yeast to be transferred via long cropping lines, with up to 50% faster yeast harvesting. The sinusoidal rotor ensures an almost pulse-free flow, significantly reducing CO₂ breakout and maintaining a stable, laminar transfer which is ideal for multiple production levels, or long cropping lines.

Bredel hose pumps have excellent suction so can be in a single position to draw from multiple tanks at varying distances, while also operating with a wide range of pipe sizes/lengths and viscosities without affecting performance.

How our pumps have enhanced yeast handling at breweries

Designed for high‑performance CIP cleaning

cip pump

The Bredel CIP pump not only maximises hygiene and saves on energy consumption, it also meets the required CIP velocity of > 2m per second and extends hose life.

The Bredel CIP was designed with a new rotor to enable breweries to achieve the CIP cleaning velocity requirements of more than 2 m per second. Automatic retractable shoes for cleaning the pump element inside are specifically designed for CIP processes to allow the pump and rest of the system downstream to be cleaned at the correct fluid velocity. The Bredel CIP pump enables full pipeline-velocity cleaning without the need for bypass lines.

The Bredel CIP pump supports a range of dosing and transfer duties, including yeast handling, flavour and colour addition, diatomaceous earth (kieselguhr) dosing for filtration, and the application of PVPP (polyvinylpolypyrrolidone) and silica gel for stabilisation. The pump’s ability to transfer abrasive or viscous media with 100% volumetric accuracy makes it especially well‑suited for these tasks.

CIP without compromise: expert Q+A

Hygienic design, low maintenance

Our brewery pumps and hoses are hygienic by design. Robust chemical and temperature resistance ensures dependable CIP/SIP performance and long service life.

Other pump types with chambers or tight clearances create dead zones where residues accumulate and biofilm can develop. The Bredel CIP pump features a single, continuous fluid path, eliminating dead spaces and reducing cross-contamination risk, which is important for breweries with rapid changeovers or high SKU variability.

Our long-life pumps only have one wearing part to minimise maintenance downtime and costs. Bredel hose pumps dose abrasive diatomaceous earth, PVPP and silica gel without excessive hose wear, for low maintenance costs. There are no valves and seals to wear, clog or leak. The Bredel CIP pump extends hose life by automatically retracting shoes during cleaning, avoiding compression at high temperatures.

The Aflex range of PTFE-lined hose assemblies are ideal for breweries. Flexible, non-kink FaBLINE™ hoses provide a more robust and reliable solution than conventional hoses for transferring beer or additives to and from the carbonator, as well as feeding beer to bottling, canning or kegging lines at high pressure. FaBLINE’s smooth‑bore construction eliminates any risk of product entrapment, bacterial build‑up or cross‑contamination, while its non‑adsorbing PTFE liner ensures a consistently clean, hygienic flow path.

Solutions for filtration in brewing

Gentle handling, ideal for yeast

If yeast is damaged by a mechanical, higher shear pump during beer production, it leads to wasted product, lost time and higher costs.

The gentle, low-shear pumping of Certa and Bredel pumps protects yeast integrity, minimises yeast damage and enables yeast to be harvested multiple times, which preserves beer quality and reduces yeast costs.

Our shear-sensitive pumps also prevent aeration and foaming, ensuring consistent aroma and taste.

Frequently asked questions

What energy‑saving advantages do Certa and Bredel CIP pumps offer compared to other pumps?

Due to its one shaft, one seal design, Certa is considerably more energy efficient than other positive displacement pumps and uses up to 50% less power. Their sinusoidal rotor design provides high efficiency at high viscosities, reducing power consumption.

Bredel CIP pump reduces power consumption as there is no need to run the pump during CIP cycles. Breweries that use the Bredel CIP pump and operate 24/7 can save approximately four hours a day in cleaning. This reduces energy consumption by 16% or 1,460 hours annually.

  • Beyond energy savings, increased efficiency contributes to:
  • Shorter CIP duration
  • Reduced water consumption
  • Reduced use of cleaning chemicals
  • Lower thermal load on equipment
  • Lower effluent generation
Do you have any solutions for chemical dosing at breweries?

Watson-Marlow process pumps provide robust chemical resistance, containment of harmful chemicals and precise dosing to minimise chemical costs during CIP. Also, they deliver a fixed volume per revolution for precise dosing of flavourings or finings, which reduces costly chemical overuse.

Qdos chemical metering pumps deliver ±1% accurate dosing with minimal maintenance to cut chemical costs for water treatment and CIP. Their robust chemical resistance and containment make them a safer, reliable option.

If a pump is not meeting the requested CIP cleaning velocity of 2.5m/sec, does WMFTS have a solution?

Yes, we developed the Bredel CIP pump precisely to meet cleaning velocity requirements. Since the Bredel CIP pump achieves the required CIP velocity, it ensures no contamination and avoids spoiled product. It has a hygienic design – the only point of contact with the fluid is the inside of the hose. Strong chemical and thermal resistance ensures reliable CIP/SIP performance, long service life and reduced operational risk. Diaphragm pumps are not clean after CIP due to their internal design. Progressive cavity pumps are the same as they have a U joint and dead-end spots which are not always clean after CIP. As there are no dead-end spots or hidden areas with hose pumps like Bredel, they are clean after CIP.
