Leading brewery switches to Certa Sine pumps for better handling of maltose syrup

Certa Sine pumps provide high suction and low maintenance to improve maltose handling

Certa Sine pumps improve transfer of maltose syrup

One of the world’s leading brewing companies has improved its unloading and transferring of maltose syrup after switching to Certa Sine® pumps from MasoSine at a production site in Brazil.

The high suction capability and low maintenance of the sinusoidal pumps have significantly enhanced operational efficiency at the site which produces internationally recognised beer brands.

The Brazilian brewery uses Certa Sine pumps to efficiently and reliably unload maltose syrup from delivery trucks and then dose it into the manufacturing process with precision and consistency.

The brewery requires handling maltose syrup at operating conditions of:

  • Flow rates of 20–25 tonnes/hour
  • Viscosity of 7,000–15,000 cP
  • Temperatures of 40–60°C

After the brewery experienced high maintenance and frequent leakages in unloading and transferring maltose syrup with lobe pumps, it switched to Certa Sine pumps.

Certa Sine pumps comfortably meet the operating demands of the brewery. With powerful suction capability, Certa Sine pumps can easily handle a wide range of viscosities (1 cP – 8 million cP) without compromising performance. Their low-shear, gentle pumping action means the maltose syrup is also not damaged.

The brewery selected Certa Sine pumps for:

  • High suction power, for faster unloading
  • Only one pump shaft and therefore only one seal system to reduce risk of a leakage
  • Easy maintenance, with one wearing part for reliable operation
  • Heating jacket, which helps maintain maltose syrup temperature and viscosity during transfer

“The main advantages for the brewery in this application are the Certa pump’s ability to operate efficiently with different viscosities without requiring adjustments, the heating jacket that helps maintain the ideal product temperature and viscosity, and its high suction power for reliable unloading and transfer operations.”

Deivy Batista, National Sales Manager - Process Industries at Watson-Marlow, said: “The main advantages for the brewery in this application are the Certa pump’s ability to operate efficiently with different viscosities without requiring adjustments, the heating jacket that helps maintain the ideal product temperature and viscosity, and its high suction power for reliable unloading and transfer operations.”

Since switching to Certa Sine pumps, the brewery has maximised productivity by reducing downtime, improved unloading efficiency due to the superior suction, and enhanced process reliability across varying viscosities.

The pump’s one-shaft, one-seal design simplifies maintenance and also contributes to lower energy consumption compared to other positive displacement pump technologies.

The Certa Sine 300 pump is running at 400 rpm with a flow rate of 12 m³/h and using 5.5 KW.

The Certa Sine 400 pump – 380 rpm with a flow rate of 25 m³/h and using 11 KW.

Watson-Marlow provided technical guidance to optimise pump performance in this application. This included operating with a variable frequency drive (VFD) and starting at low speed, using a heating jacket to maintain product temperature and viscosity, applying hot water to the seal flushing and cleaning system, and integrating a pressure transmitter with the VFD to enable automatic adjustment of pump speed and flow in response to changes in product viscosity during operation.

As well as this world-famous brewery, other food and beverage companies in Brazil are using Certa Sine pumps for handling high maltose.
